TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE you need to stop being brainwashed by the mass mainstream media (get your news from alternative websites and recycle that TV), reduce your carbon foot-print (here's how), choose food that is better for you and the planet (organic, vegetarian and fair-trade), stop buying things you don't need, stop your dependence on pharmaceutical drugs unless you absolutely need them, recycle as much as possible and buy recycled products, and support life-promoting programs (educational, alternative money, health, food etc.).

That little paragraph above is the entirety of our planetary responsibility at this time. And yet, almost everyone who has choice in these areas is choosing the path to destruction — for the planet, society and themselves. Why?

Mainstream media brain-washes us into maintaining the status quo. Just about all the films, music shows, television programs, newspaper and magazine articles promote unsustainable and suicidal values and lifestyles. For when we see what our media icons have and do, we aspire to the same — it's human nature.

So the MOST important step in making a difference is to stop the incessant "old-world" propaganda that only pushes the world ever closer to the brink. We have to take control of our own values and opinions so that we can finally stop this unconscious mass-suicide. This is the only way.

I know it sounds radical, and you may have to wean yourself off it slowly, but GET RID of your TV. At first the silence will be deafening — you will be like the addict coming off his supply. And just when you think you are going crazy with nothing to distract your mind, you will start to feel what is going on inside. And when you can feel, you become a human being. All activism has to start from this place of humanity.

Albrecht Haushofer's Last Sonnet - Ray McGovern
Haushofer was a German professor at the University of Berlin between 1940 and 1944. He was also Hess' advisor on foreign affairs in 1931 and acted as an advocate of German foreign policy across Europe throughout the 1930s. Seeing the disasterous direction Hitler and the Nazi party were taking Germany, he joined the failed 1944 bomb plot to kill Hitler. Guilty of treason and unwilling to sign a confession, Haushofer was shot by the SS in 1945 as Russian troops entered Berlin. But according to former CIA analyst, Ray McGovern, after he was shot, the SS found a confession note in his pocket, written as a sonnet. But it was not what they expected. Here is an English translation of the original German:

Guilt
I am guilty,
But not in the way you think.
I should have earlier recognized my duty;
I should have more sharply called evil evil;
I reined in my judgment too long.
I did warn,
But not enough, and clear;
And today I know what I was guilty of.

[The last line is a play on words, and can also be translated:
"And today I know what had been my obligation."]

This note is reminder to all of us that we need to start calling evil evil, rather than foolishly and dangerously thinking it safer to stay silent and do nothing. What happened in Nazi Germany is happening in America, Europe and other Western nations right now — today! We seem to have forgotten the lessons of history, preferring to give ever greater powers to our leaders in exchange for 'security', just as the Germans did in the 1930s. As Edmund Burke famously said: Evil prevails when good men do nothing.
